What ages is this book series for?

This book series was designed for kids age 5-8 in mind. That being said, we have had COUNTLESS parents tell us Lily’s adventures are their 2 + 3-year-old’s favorite book! Our books fit right between a picture book and a chapter book: the stories are longer and have more depth than your typical picture book, but the detailed illustrations help younger kids stay engaged and captivated. It’s a fun book for parents to read with their kids, and younger readers can slowly transition to reading it on their own.

Are Lily's adventure for girls only? Will boys like these stories?

Yes! Both boys and girls love Lily’s adventures! Both of our books (Scandinavia and now Japan) mix elements that appeal to all genders - cherry blossoms and ninjas, flower crowns and grumpy vikings with swords, dragons and sumo wrestlers, mermaids and strawberry cakes etc. Lily’s adventures are stories about discovery, finding courage to brave the unknown, and not judging things by their appearance.

Why self-publish? Why not find a publisher?

Lily’s adventures don’t fit within the traditional format of publishing industry standards. Publishers like picture books are under 40 pages/1000 words OR chapter books that are much longer than our stories (and not fully illustrated). There isn’t a category for how we envision Lily’s adventures - fully illustrated stories that bridge picture and chapter books. We knew we’d face countless rejections from traditional publishers - so decided to stay true to our vision, take the plunge and self-publish instead! It has NOT been an easy route by any means - figuring out distribution on our own has been especially tricky. But we wouldn’t change a thing about our decision, this journey so far has been nothing short of amazing.

How are you doing research on Japan to make sure you get everything right?

Good question! We have read a lot of books and articles, and have been interviewing Japanese people (and people who have lived in Japan a while). We have formed a “focus group” that is helping us review the drafts of the book and make sure we get everything right :) We also traveled to Japan last month. It was a great opportunity for us to deepen our knowledge of the Japanese culture and ask a LOT of questions to anyone willing to help us with our research - including SUMO WRESTLERS + a NINJA….it was such a fun research trip!

Do I need to read the books of this series in order?

Nope you don’t! You can read them in any order you like. Reading our first book before the second one might be a good idea though if you want to find out how Lily gets invited in the Worldwide Adventure Society.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
